Korean Shaved Ice - Snow and Moon Dessert Cafe
When I was 20 I lived in Taiwan for 5 months, eating my weight in Chinese food, which out there is just called 'food'. Everything I ate was delicious and to prove it, I gained 12 pounds. However, where I found Asia (blanket statement) to be severely lacking is in the dessert department. The 1st time I was served 'Asian ice cream' was the most disappointed I have ever been. More disappointing than the time I dated a fiercely handsome man who didn't own a car but was in possession of 2 (2!) unicycles. Chinese ice cream is literally ice (coarser then a snow cone) topped with red bean (why Lord?) and a touch of condensed milk. I may or may not have cried. It was so bad I would have preferred to lick an off-brand Times Square Hello Kitty and cough up a hairball. I was expecting creamy scoops of chocolate and vanilla but instead I got a unicycle.
Needless to say, when I went to this Korean sweet cafe - I was anticipating the dessert equivalent of a homely man with a bus pass, but ended up with George Clooney in a Ferrari. We ordered 2 dishes - both outdoing each other in taste.
At the bottom of the bowls were milk snow flakes - like someone had taken a cheese grater to ice cream. The Real Chocolate Snow was topped with wafers, cookies and chocolate sauce. The Strawberry Snow was smothered in strawberry coulis, whipped cream and decorated with sliced strawberries. The extremely generous portions are great for sharing. This is one of those novelties that I will definitely revisit again and again. Go here.
Fuck you red bean paste.
